HAPPY NOVEMBER! HAPPY MOVEMBER.

Urbandictionary.com describes community as something to be shared by individuals, usually food and drink, always from the same container.

This isn't quite what community nights are about, but I like the underlying concept. The idea that community shares "germs" and welcomes others sharing in the germs too.

So this friday, VCF welcomes you to come share some germs with us!

Not really germs, persay. but, friendship, for sure. This friday, we'll be spending some time together, collaging, making art, ect. ect. ect. Using creative outlets to frame our experiences of this year, U of T, life, anything under the sun, including the latest episode of Community. (get the humour behind that? do you? do you?)

So this friday, we'll be meeting for some germ sharing in Hart House (were not sure the room yet, but it'll be updated on the Facebook event or someone will be waiting outside to guide you in!)

Plaid party: turkey edition

October is here, and that means one thing.... TURKEY! Thanksgiving is this weekend, crazy eh? To think that school has been rampant for almost 6 whole weeks now. So this further means we need to celebrate.

Celebrate what, you may ask! Well, we can celebrate the fact that we are almost half done a semester. Celebrate the fact that turkey is so good it puts you to sleep. Or, my favourite reason to celebrate is the one that encompasses just how amazing plaid is.

Yes, you heard me. PLAID. so this friday, come to 112 McGill for a community dinner that will blow your mind... because we will all be wearing PLAID. :) It starts at 7:30, and there are only two conditions: bring some food (desserts, veggies, main dishes are especially helpful.. and if you dont wanna bring food thats cool too), and wear plaid (again, if you dont wanna, come still!)

and most importantly, INVITE PEOPLE! its free to anyone to come, no matter who they are and if they have been out to vcf or not!

FRIENDS.

Wow. It's almost October, isnt that insane? Where did September go?

GTA Fall Con was this last weekend. And it was insane, and so good. The Gospel of Mark will never look the same to me. It was also just stellar community time, for us at U of T VCF.

So heres the thing, weve got a stellar community. Filled with amazing people. And amazing times. Don't worry though, our community is never exclusive, and loves new people. So.. heres something to check out.

This friday, we'll be hosting our second community night. 7pm, were meeting in front of Hart House, and will probs be going out for coffee/tea/hot beveridges/cold beveridges/dessert/food aftewards. so you should COME.

This year, as a fellowship we're studying John; one of the ways Jesus calls people to him, is by inviting them to "come and see". So here it goes...

The impending doom of school starts tomorrow... essays, papers, tests, bookstore lines. September has come, and has hit us like a ton of bricks.

But, my friends, do not fret! There is still hope... we can have, wait for it, FUN this year!

Tomorrow, VCF at U of Teee is going to try to bring some fun into the day dreaded by many students... Not only will we continue to bring tye dye back, but, we are going to bring the party to the campus, what what.

SO here it is... TOMORROW, 11-3, HART HOUSE, EPIC GAME OF TWISTER, FREE FOOD. Didnt that sentence just give you shivers?

Frosh week is complete ! The Froshies are all here, roaming Toronto, starting to feel settled into the craziness we call our city... and that means two things.... School starts on Monday (for most of us anyways, poor engineers), and FREE FOOOD ON MONDAY.

Yea, you heard me right... this Monday, September 12th/2011 will be a legendary day for us who roam the campus known as Ewe of Tee. VCF, because we like food and we like to party (also, we have developed quite the affection for tye dye), are hosting a free BBQ and an EPIC GAME OF TWISTER. Imagine over 50 people on a HUGE twister board, twisting and tangling all over the place. It's going to be seriously epic. This Monday, between 11 and 3, come and stop by in front of HART HOUSE (that building with the roof that the engineers paint each year), and get some free food, get to know others really well by gettin all close to them on the Twister Board, and enjoy the party that will make the back to school blues seem so far away.

So, yes, lets recap...

Today, as I was walking in the city, I noticed the clumps and clumps of people piling into the streets, moving into houses, and the endless amounts of first years orienting themselves to their new cities. This year, U of T VCF group will be trying out some crazy and radical orientation events, for both first years new to their campus, and upper years trying to reinvent themselves in new ways... with the hopes that we, as a community, will learn that university isn't just a time for school and academics, but is so much more.

So my friends, heres the lineup of crazy amazing first week of class events that you should totally check out. yes, they will be amazing.

This Tuesday and Thursday, September 6th and 8th, we will be partnering with our amazing friends in Korean Christian Fellowship in hosting free campus tours. If you're willing to stop by, wear a tye dye t-shirt and show some first years around campus with us, well be hosting tours from 1-3pm (meeting at 1pm in front of Robarts), and 7-9 pm (meeting at 7pm in front of Robarts too).

Wednesday, look for us in our amazing tye dye tshirts (courtesy of Daniel Westacott), at the clubs day fair! Come visit!!!!!!!

For our main event.... (duh duh duh), next Monday, September 12 (yup, the first day of classes), we will be hosting a crazy huge BBQ and GIANT TWISTER GAME. It's going to be epic. More deets to follow friends, all I can tell you is it'll be from 11-3ish. :)

Friday September 17th, we'll be hosting a huge community dinner. Yup, because we want to be a community. and more importantly, welcome others into that community.

September 19th.. our bible studies will start happening. Theres alot of freedom in different times and days they will be hosted, so dont worry about missing out!!

As we grow as a community through scripture, and step out into the world to pursue the restoration of the Kingdom together, some pretty remarkable things are going to happen. Our man Thomas is just beaming with joy these days, and here's why:

“My most recent crazy decision is to go to South Asia this coming summer for 6 weeks with Inter-Varsity. This decision has quite a back-story to it – starting in 2008 where I was met with God’s desire for me to serve Him in another country. I am very good at finding excuses to remain in complete control and successfully remained in Canada for the summers of 2009 and 2010, all the while knowing God was asking me to go. This year I am accepting the invitation after much prayer, support, debate, and thought. This is an opportunity for me to learn from God through people I have never met and to learn about cross-cultural ministry. I feel thoroughly unprepared for the journey, but as a close friend of mine said in response to my complaint: “Perfect!” I am currently learning what it means to give God control over my life and am excited for the journey He has planned out ahead for me!”

Last week we discovered the story of God calling, sending, and giving power to people throughout history to pursue restoration in the world, and this week we're exploring how we relate as individuals in all our ethnic and cultural diversity! KINGDOM PEOPLE//SG//PRAYER//JAW

This week is the first installment of IVCF's KINGDOM PEOPLE. We are combining our community dinners for the next few weeks in with this teaching time. There's going to be a FREE MEAL each week as we gather with students from all the campuses across the GTA to figure out what it means to be a people shaped by, and living within, the Kingdom of God. So come on out! This week's installment is titled "At The Start" and will be exploring Shalom, a.k.a. God's intent in the world. It will be in line with God's creation... meaning it will be GOOD!

Small Groups Bible Studies are on the go now, and their locations are clearing up! Check out the side bar of the blog and look out for email updates to find out exactly where your small group is meeting. AND, we think the most novel of novel ideas would be to invite a friend to come to your Bible study. Friends are good. Jesus is really good. The math adds up to something fantastic!

Prayer is happening every day of the week! Here's the rundown:

Ontario Pioneer Camp came in second in their category of the Pepsi Refresh Challenge, and are the proud recipients of $25,000 dollars, which will allow 20 children and teens with special need to have a great Pioneer Camp experience. For more information, Ontario Pioneer Camp's website

Saturday Breakfast and Service Project

On Saturday morning, November 6th, there will be a 9am breakfast at Dave Taylor's (see map below) and then at 10 we will be heading over to St. George the Martyr Anglican Church (see map #2) to help them with work they are doing in their rectory.

Feel free to join us for breakfast, or painting, or both. If you have any supplies you would like to bring (brushes, rollers, trays, masking tape) make sure they are properly labelled so you can find them at the end of the day. We expect to leave at around 4, but feel free to leave earlier.

Ontario Pioneer Camp & Pepsi Refresh

Hey guys! Just a quick update about one of InterVarsity's other ministries, Pioneer Camps, and speciafically Ontario Pioneer Camp. OPC has been around since 1929 up in Muskoka, and they're awesome!

While notifying y'all about the existence of Ontario Pioneer Camp is indeed worthy of a blog post, that's not what I'm writing tonight.

OPC has a program called the Inclusion Program, which was founded about 20 years ago, to allow children with special needs to be full participants in the OPC experience. To raise support for this program, OPC entered the Pepsi Refresh Project to win $25,000, which would allow 20 children with special needs be fully included in the Pioneer Camp experience.

So, if you could, just head over to Pepsi Refresh for more info and to vote for OPC!

Just register and then click vote! You can vote once a day until October 31st, when everything is tallied, and the top 2 get funded!

Last week we started our journey into the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew, looking at the calling of James, John, Peter, and Andrew, as well as the beginning of Jesus' ministry. This week we're moving on to the Beatitudes!

As usual, we have 3 different opportunities.

in University College's Junior Common Room (JCR)

Fall Retreat: CHECK! Next Up: SMALL GROUPS

Well what a weekend that was! Time to get some sleep, and to rest our mind, body, soul, after the awesomeness that was this weekend's fall retreat. If you didn't manage to make it up north with us, fear not. There are a ton of great stories and excited chatter going around, and I know it won't be hard to get the VCF/KCFers to share what God was doing.

PRAYER. COMMUNITY. WORD. THRESHOLD. WITNESS...

It just didn't stop this weekend!

Now we're launching into our regular routine for the autumn. Here's the deal: We're hosting three small groups throughout the week, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Each small group is going to be studying Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in Matthew. Come join us at any one of the following three locations for each given evening.

Tuesday Fun! Retreat! Small Groups!

So here's the post everyone has been waiting for! Sorry for the long wait - we've been working out the scheduling kinks on our end.

So first off... TUESDAY: We're going to mix things up with Community Dinner this week. Instead of heading to Dave and Allison's place, we're all going to meet up in front of Robarts at 6pm. THEN we're going to split into smaller groups and head out for dinner together in different locations. This will give us another chance to get to know some people we might not have met yet, and for those who are new to U of T, you'll get the inside scoop on great places to eat around campus. Another reason you'll want to come is because Dave and Allison will be handing out waivers for....

THE FALL RETREAT!

Here are the details: The cost is $30, and we'll be going up to the Taylor family cottages next weekend. We need to know numbers by the early point of this week so we can organize rides, and get enough food for everyone! Our speaker for the weekend is going to be U of T alumnus JOSH SIU (pictured in all his glory). Cars will be heading up at various times on Friday to accommodate those who have later classes. Hey everyone,

We had a great turn out at Clubs Day this year, and are looking forward to getting to know a lot of new faces this fall! Here's the quick run down of the next few weeks for Varsity Christian Fellowship:

Sept 14: Community Dinner - 6pm

We're having another community dinner at Dave and Allison's place on 112 McGill. You don't need to bring anything, and what's even better is... it's free! We're hoping to announce when small groups will start at that point.

The week of Sept 20-24: Small Group Bible Studies begin!

Scripture studies are pretty much the meat (tofu for our vegetarian friends), potatoes, gravy, and elegant dessert of our group. We have found the most growth through wrestling through scripture together as a community, and hope you get a chance to experience it for yourself. Our journey into the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew will begin here this year!

Sept 24-26: Fall Retreat

We're heading up north for the weekend with our on campus siblings Korean Christian Fellowship (UTKCF) for a joint retreat. This is sure to be a great time to meet people, to relax in nature as autumn arrives, and to learn more about what it means to follow Jesus as a university student. More info to come!

-We'll quickly catch up and hear how everyone's summer was.

2. We're going to talk about our vision for the fall.
-We'll talk about Small Groups, Clubs Day, Retreat, and the like. It's going to be pretty exciting!

3. We're going to make T-Shirts!
-Bring a blank grey, black, or white T-shirt that you can paint on. I promise this will be fun!

Varsity Christian Fellowship is a part of Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF), a campus ministry that is present on campuses across Canada. You can check out our purpose and doctrine here. Basically, we're people who love the Kingdom of God the more we hear and learn about it, and want to grow into Extraordinary Kingdom Leaders.

Here are some of the things you can look forward to as a part of the VCF community this upcoming year:

SCRIPTURE STUDY - This is where the gold is! We study scripture together in community using an inductive manuscript method. Never tried it before? That's alright, there are plenty of people willing to introduce you to it. Basically, we try to study scripture by investigating what is in the text itself, and letting it speak for itself. The results have been, quite literally, life changing.

SHARED MEALS - We are a community that loves to eat together and spend time together. We think it's what makes us grow together as people who love God, who love each other, and who serve together. After scripture study, potluck meals have become the core of our fellowship times.

PARTNERSHIPS - We are a community that wants to grow as servant leaders of the Kingdom in a variety of contexts. One of the ways we do that is by taking part in Global, Urban, and Camp Partnerships during the spring and summer. There are a plethora of opportunities to grow and serve with other IVCF folks from across Canada in either overseas contexts, in our own urban backyard, or with youth at summer camps. It's important for us to be actively living out the things we study in scripture, and Global, Urban, and Camp Partnerships provide a tangible avenue to explore Kingdom lifestyles.

This is just a teaser of what we are about, and what is in store for the upcoming school year. Come visit us at Clubs Day, or email the staff who work with our club, for more information (though don't email Dave in August - he'll be on a Global Partnership!).

And let me tell you, it was a ridiculously awesome time away. He is MORE than eager to share his experiences with everyone, what God was doing in the midst of it all, and why it's an exciting time to be a part of VCF at U of T. Season Premieres

There's a lot of hoopla going around about Obama's State of the Union address interfering with the season premiere of LOST. Announce a new Health Care plan vs. finding out Oceanic 815 finally makes it to L.A.? Tough choices these days. Luckily for us, we don't have to fret over our favourite hour of television and large group conflicting this week. And that's good, because large group this week is going to be quite the GAME CHANGER! Some new plans for the VCF community will be discussed this week, and it's exciting, cliffhanger-ish, and pivotal to our future.

So...

The year is winding down. The final large group and the incredible Christmas party are behind us. Most of you are the midst of writing exams, or at least preparing to write exams. And what's better than preparing for exams? Doing it with friends over FREE FOOD! Come study and hang out at Allison`s from 1-6 on Wednesday, or drop by for dinner at 6. We will have lots of snack food to inspire studying as well as some hot apple cider and hot chocolate. Some people may even be willing to help you with studying, or you may be able to help someone else! So show up at 159 Harbord Street, between Spadina and Bathurst. This is a great SCOOP: Tuesday is a momentous day! It is the beginning of a new month; 25 days before Christmas; 27 days before Urbana; the first day you can decorate your apartment/home for the festive season without the scorn of housemates who don't like decorations going up too early; a great time to pop in 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and tear up at CB's accurate indictment of consumerism, and Linus' dramatic reciting of Luke's gospel; most importantly, it's the LAST LARGE GROUP OF 2009! We're going to try something we haven't done yet this year with scripture, and those involved in running it are ridiculously excited to see what comes to life out of the text. This is going to be BIG! That's all I'm going to say, other than "Consider yourself INVITED!"

I hope you are all enjoying some turkey or tofurkey with family and friends this weekend. This weekend is always a good time to do something we should be doing on a daily basis - reflecting on the things we are thankful for and blessed by. I know I'm thankful for this community - all the wonderful people it's comprised of, and the great things God is, and has been, doing in us! If you can, find some time this weekend to write down what God has done and is continuing to do in you this year, I'd highly suggest it (even to the non-journalling-types).

Alright, here's THE SCOOP for this week (it's a light one):

There's NO Large Group this week! Instead, call up or email someone you'd normally see there, and hang out, grab coffee, see a movie, talk a walk, explore Toronto, or if you must, take a week to yourself to catch up on work or some much needed Zzzzzzzzzz. Hey everyone!

We've got a quick request to run by you. Next Friday we are looking for volunteers who want to get their photo taken for a new campaign coming up with our parent organization, IVCF. So if you're free, and want to be seen nationwide, please email dstone[at]ivcf[dot]ca. There will be food provided for those who volunteer! We're looking for as many people as possible who are free from 10 am to 3pm, so if you're interested, please let Dave know!

Next up, Large Group makes it's official switch to the Multi-Faith Centre (569 Spadina Ave - See Map). Come hang out between 6pm-8pm (though things will get started around 6:30pm). We have an alumnus of the group coming to share her story with us!

Hello everyone!

Thanks to all of you who made it out to the retreat this weekend. We truly had a blast! If you're curious as to what all happened, rest assured that there are a bunch of people who are more than eager to share some stories!

Can't make Monday night small group? Well, we are planning on doing another small group during the day, however we're still fine-tuning a time (sorry for the delay). Keep your eyes on the look out for a midday Small Group Bible Study starting next week.

RETREAT! THIS WEEKEND!

RETREAT IS THIS WEEKEND! COME ON OUT!

If you weren't able to make it out to large group these past two weeks, but you want to get connected with the community, the fall retreat this weekend is an excellent opportunity!

If you were at large group but forgot a form, no worries.

THE COST? ONLY $30 (plus a bit extra for gas money)

This gets you food, a warm place to sleep, a weekend with friends (or soon to be friends), a great dose of scripture/teaching/and spiritual growth, and a whole lot of fun!

AUTUMN IS OFFICIALLY UPON US. LET'S GIVE THE SUMMER ONE LAST HURRAH WITH A WEEKEND AT COTTAGES BY THE LAKE!

If you are worried about having homework, have no fear, there will be time to do work made available. And if you need to leave early, let us know so we can see if rides can be adjusted! Exclamation!

Large Group and Fall Retreat!

Hey everyone. We've got an exciting week ahead of us! Large group will be meeting again in Wycliffe College (5 Hoskin Ave) from shortly after 6 to 8pm. This week we're picking up where the story left off last week, and heading into Jesus and the Wedding in Cana! Those who are able to are welcome to come out for coffee and conversation afterwards!

Also, we have the FALL RETREAT this weekend. We're leaving Friday, and heading up to a row of cottages in South River. The cost for the weekend is $30 (plus gas money), which will cover meals for the weekend. This is a great way to relax, learn in community, and get to know one another before the craziness of the school year fully sets in. Sign up sheets will be available at large group (or if you're unable to come this week, email us and we'll get you a form).

Also, if you are able and willing to drive this weekend, please email Dave or Alison.

So again: Large Group on Tuesday, 6-8pm! Fall Retreat this weekend!

SEPT 15: FIRST LARGE GROUP OF THE YEAR!

First off, thanks to everyone who came out for the BBQ and ice cream afterwards. A great time was had by all!

Secondly, come on out to Wycliffe College on Tuesday for our first large group of the year. We will be meeting from 6-8pm for a time of getting know each other, worship, and sharing about our vision for this upcoming year and how to get involved! To find us, enter the front entrance of Wycliffe College, and hang a left (or look for the signs inside). ---->

Also, remember that Fall Retreat 09 is coming up quickly (Sept 25-27)! Sign up sheets will be available starting Tuesday. The cost is only $30 (plus a couple bucks to chip in for gas), for a fun weekend up north before school gets too crazy!

FREE BBQ! TUESDAY 3pm-5pm. UTSU BUILDING!

Are you hungry? Do you want free food? Do you want to meet some new people? Then come visit us Tuesday afternoon in front of the UTSU building in Hart House Circle for our free BBQ. That's right! Free Food! The fun runs from 3pm-5pm, and there will be other fun stuff happening while we're all hanging out (and more than likely afterwards - if you don't already have plans for the evening).

So in conclusion:

CLUBS FAIR - September 4, 2009!

Come one! Come all! Clubs Fair 2009 is this Friday, and the VCF group is going to be representing with a table or two! Come visit us in the Hart House circle between 12 and 4 on Friday. If you are new to U of T this fall, a seasoned undergrad veteran, or a returning member of the community, you are more than welcome to stop in to chat, catch up, and hear what's in store for the fall! Hope to see you all there!

But NO, the fun doesn't stop there! Later on Friday night a bunch of us are going to go see Shakespeare in the Park in High Park. The gates open at 6pm, we're aiming to be there for 7pm, and the show starts at 8pm. Admission is Pay-What-You-Can (suggested donation $20) at the gate. Look for a group of people holding a VCF sign inside the gates!
